Tragedy for Poland!

Polish President Lech Kaczyński was killed early Saturday along with his wife Mrs Maria Kaczyńska when their plane crashed not far from the airport in Smoleńsk, Russia. Several top military officials, Members of Parliament, Senators, the head of the national bank, plane crew and other people died, too. No survivors! They had been traveling to Russia for the 70th anniversary of the massacre of Polish prisoners of war in the village of Katy?. Some 20,000 Polish officers were executed there during World War II. Their death left their families and us all completely bereft.

Peace to their memory!

People from the whole world are offering their condolences to Poland.

Terrible news Marzanna. My mind has been on Poland all weekend. Such an irony to have it happen near Katyn... My thoughts are with all of you...,
Susan Parker-Burns, Washington D.C., USA

We are deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of so many leaders of Poland who were enroute to the memorial to the Katyn Massacre.  We just learned of the crash of the airplane from internet news a few minutes ago. During the time we worked in Poland a few years ago, we learned about the Katyn Massacre, a horrible loss of many of Poland's best and brightest people. We know this is a tragic time for the people of Poland.  We  pray for a good outcome during the upcoming weeks of transition to new leadership.  Earl and Kathleen Currie, USA

We heard the news on the radio this morning and were shocked, a tragedy for Poland and I would have e-mailed you sooner had we not been in the garden. It is like summer today. Your country will be in shock. It is very sad when there is a plane crash and one wonders why that plane. The percentage of crashes is minute compared to the number of flights - flying is safer than crossing the road.
Jean and Dave Hall, England

I heard about this tragic news early this morning. This is a great lose for the people of Poland as well as Polish people around the world. I had the opportunity to personally meet with Lech Kaczynski a few years ago, when he was visiting Polonia in Chicago. He was scheduled to be an honorary guest at this year's Chicago's May 3'd Polish parade. With sadness, George Wozniczka, Chicago, USA

It is the top news story here, so I read about it after reading your email. What a tragedy for your country! We hope and pray that things will turn out well for Poland. Phil & Mercy Hegland, California, USA

this airplane crash is a tragedy not only for Poland, but also for Germany - we are sad and in consternation and we mourn with our Polish friends!
Burkard, Nicola, Caroline and Christoph, Germany

We stand by your side, you Polish people in this time of mourning. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard the news, Marzanna. Terrible woods of Katyn as for the Polish history and present days. Some journalists of your country said that it was a well-known fact among officials that the Presidential plane was not a safe means of transportation, didn't they? Apart from that, what went through the pilots's mind? So sorry,
Alain, from France

I`m awfully sorry for the loss of your President and other Polish personalities and for the rest of the people killed in the plane crash last Saturday.  All my condolences.
