CZESTOCHOWA, Poland - On June 4, 2009, the U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victore Ashe visited High School No 5 in Częstochowa. He was greeted by 2007 Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) alumna Marzanna Gromotowicz and students who study American history, literature and culture as part of her new American studies program for high students.
Ambassador Ashe officially opened a new multimedia classroom which was equipped thanks to a Federal Assistance Award from the U.S. Department of State. The award was given to school to help cover the costs connected with purchasing specialized equipment to be used explicitly during classes on American culture, history, life and civilization at school.
Ambassador Ashe addressed the students and spoke about the 90th Anniversary of Polish-American Diplomatic relations and the 30th Anniversary of the Pope John Paul II's first pilgrimage to Poland. Remarking that his visit on June 4th also coincided with the 20th anniversary of the first free elections in Poland in 1989, the ambassador saluted the Polish people for making a decisive break from communist rule. Ambassador Ashe thanked Gromotowicz for the contributions she has made towards promoting American-Polish co-operation.
Ambassador Ashe also held a press conference at school in which representatives from the local government and students from the high school participated. The students were curious about different aspects of Ambassador’s life and work, his opinion on international affairs and the best diplomats in history that the ambassador admires the most.
Students were very glad that Ambassador Ashe had decided to honor them with his presence and at the end of the meeting, on behalf of all school community, they thanked him for coming with a bouquet of flowers.
Leaving the school Ambassador Victor Ashe visited one more classroom where American Studies course takes place. Gromotowicz explains that "His visit will remain for all the participants an unforgettable experience. Thank you, Mr. Ambassador!"
